2025 IWD: WOWICAN Calls for Women’s Empowerment in Literacy and Governance

As the world marked International Women’s Day (IWD) today, the Katsina State Chapter of the Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) made a powerful appeal for women’s empowerment through literacy education and skills acquisition.

The association emphasized the need for urgent government intervention to prevent women from being exploited by bandits and to foster their active participation in national development.

This year’s IWD celebration, themed “Invest in Women. Accelerate Action,” highlights the critical need to address systemic barriers that hinder women’s progress and to create more opportunities for their active involvement in all spheres of life.

A Call for Literacy and Economic Empowerment

Speaking at the event, WOWICAN Chairperson, Dr. Agatha Nyam, stressed that investing in women’s education and skills development is not just a moral obligation but a strategic move toward national progress.

She noted that women’s lack of access to education in Katsina State and other parts of Nigeria has made them vulnerable to exploitation by criminal groups, including bandits who use them as informants. Addressing this issue, she urged the state government to create policies that ensure women receive quality literacy education and vocational training.

“Education is a powerful tool for liberation. When women are educated, they are less likely to be manipulated by criminal elements and more likely to contribute positively to society,” Dr. Nyam said.

Women’s Inclusion in Governance and Nation-Building

Beyond literacy, WOWICAN also called for greater inclusion of women in governance. Dr. Nyam emphasized that women should not only be beneficiaries of policies but active participants in decision-making processes at all levels.

“We want women to be included in governance. We want women to participate in nation-building and peacebuilding. Without peace, there can be no progress,” she stated.

She urged the government to create platforms that enable women to take on leadership roles, particularly in resolving conflicts and fostering national unity.

Spiritual and Moral Call to Action

The celebration also served as a moment of reflection, with women being encouraged to uphold moral values, avoid false teachings, and embrace unity beyond tribal or religious differences.

Dr. Nyam acknowledged the challenges many women face, particularly in balancing societal expectations with personal growth.

However, she reaffirmed that with faith, determination, and the right support systems, women can break barriers and achieve greatness.

“Despite our tight schedules and the ongoing fasting, we have come out to mark this day in prayers. We will continue to pray for lasting peace, unity, and progress in our state,” she added.

Investing in Women for a Better Future

The theme of this year’s IWD resonates deeply in a country like Nigeria, where gender inequality continues to limit opportunities for women. Despite various efforts, women remain underrepresented in politics, education, and the workforce.

WOWICAN’s appeal underscores the urgent need for policies that prioritize women’s development, including:

•        Expanding access to quality education and vocational training for women and girls.

•        Implementing policies that promote gender equality in leadership positions.

•        Providing financial and technical support for women entrepreneurs.

•        Strengthening legal frameworks to protect women from exploitation and violence.

As the global community continues to push for gender equality, Nigeria must take decisive steps to ensure women are not left behind. WOWICAN’s advocacy serves as a timely reminder that investing in women is investing in the future of the nation.

With collective action from individuals, organizations, and government institutions, real progress can be made toward a more just and inclusive society—one where women are empowered to lead, contribute, and thrive.
