The ancient city of Oyo is set to witness a historic moment today as His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, officially ascends the throne as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

The coronation ceremony, which has attracted dignitaries from across the country and abroad, marks a new chapter in the revered lineage of one of the most iconic traditional institutions in Yorubaland.

Oba Owoade, who hails from the royal Owoade-Agunloye family, Agure Compound in Oyo Town, succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who reigned for over five decades before his passing.

At 47 years old, the new monarch brings a wealth of global experience, modern leadership, and a strong commitment to the development of his people.

Born and raised in Oyo, Oba Owoade began his academic journey at Baptist High School, Saki. His father, a prominent figure in the Oyo North Agricultural Development Programme (ONADEP), was instrumental in boosting agricultural productivity in the Oke-Ogun region, instilling in his son a deep understanding of grassroots development.

Oba Owoade pursued a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, between 1994 and 1997.

He later obtained a Higher National Diploma from The Polytechnic, Ibadan in 2001, following which he served the nation during the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Nigeria Gas Company as a Mechanical Intern and Planner in 2002.

His professional journey began at Oceanic Bank International Plc, Warri, where he worked as a cashier between 2003 and 2004. Eager to further his education, he proceeded to the United Kingdom where he bagged a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sunderland in 2008, and a second degree in the same field from Northumbria University in 2012. He also became a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) in 2015.

Professionally, Oba Owoade gained international experience working with Oil Reach Company in Glasgow as a Planning Engineer.

He later moved to Canada, where he worked with Manitoba Hydro as a Project Coordinator—a position he held until his selection as Alaafin.

In addition to his corporate career, he is a Nigerian-Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist, serving as President of Manitoba Limited, a real estate investment and financial services company based in Canada.

Ahead of the coronation, the ancient city of Oyo has been transformed into a hub of activity and celebration.

Roads are being rehabilitated across the town to ensure smooth transportation for the high number of dignitaries and guests expected at the event.

According to the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, special canopies and seating arrangements have been put in place at the Olivet Baptist High School, the main venue of the coronation ceremony.

Durojaiye further noted that in light of the significance of the occasion, the popular Akesan Market and all other local markets will remain closed for the duration of the event to allow residents to partake fully in the festivities.

The entire city is aglow with vibrant colors, traditional dances, cultural displays, and a jubilant atmosphere reminiscent of the grandeur that defines the Alaafin’s stool.

Despite the joy and pageantry, Oba Owoade has urged the people of Oyo to celebrate with moderation and avoid any acts of vendetta, political rivalry, or division.

In a royal address, the Alaafin said, “Promoting peace and communal unity is a collective responsibility of every indigene of this ancient town. Peace and unity are critical tools for community development. A peaceful environment fosters personal growth, investment, and infrastructural advancement.”

He continued, “The time to build a robust, sustainable, and formidable communal unity is now. As individuals, let us promote peace within our town and its environs by encouraging good relationships and mutual respect.”

Security arrangements have been intensified in and around the town to ensure the safety of guests and residents.

Local vigilante groups, Amotekun operatives, and other security agencies have been deployed to maintain order during the coronation.

Today’s coronation of Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I marks not only the continuation of a proud and ancient dynasty but also signals a new era of progressive leadership that blends rich tradition with modern values.

Residents and well-wishers alike are optimistic that his reign will bring renewed development, unity, and prestige to the Oyo Kingdom.

As the drums roll and the town celebrates, all eyes remain fixed on the new Alaafin, whose ascension is both a spiritual and cultural milestone for the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large.
