The Federal Government has officially declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

The minister extended heartfelt congratulations to all Muslim faithful across the country on the successful completion of Ramadan fasting, emphasizing the spiritual significance of the holy month.

Tunji-Ojo urged Muslims to uphold the values of self-discipline, compassion, generosity, and peace that Ramadan represents. He further stressed the importance of love, forgiveness, and solidarity in fostering a more harmonious and united society.

Call for National Unity and Prayers

In his statement, the Minister of Interior called on Nigerians, irrespective of their religious affiliations, to use this period to offer prayers for the peace, stability, and prosperity of the nation.

He highlighted the need for mutual respect and understanding among different ethnic and religious groups, stating that unity is key to national development.

“The Federal Government recognizes the significance of this celebration and urges all citizens to embrace the teachings of love, sacrifice, and kindness that define the holy month of Ramadan,” the statement read.

Tunji-Ojo also encouraged citizens to celebrate Eid safely and responsibly, emphasizing the importance of remembering the less privileged through acts of kindness and charity.

A Message of Hope and Encouragement

The minister expressed optimism that the joyous occasion of Eid-el-Fitr would serve as a source of inspiration for Nigerians to foster unity and cooperation across religious and ethnic divides.

He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria, where citizens of all backgrounds can coexist in harmony.

“Dr. Tunji-Ojo also encouraged citizens to celebrate safely and responsibly, while remembering the less privileged through acts of kindness and charity, in keeping with the true spirit of Ramadan and Eid,” the statement added.

On behalf of the Federal Government, he extended heartfelt Eid Mubarak wishes to all Muslims and prayed that the blessings of the season bring happiness, success, and fulfillment to everyone.

Significance of Eid-el-Fitr

Eid-el-Fitr, also known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam. It marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. The festival is observed with prayers, feasting, charity, and acts of goodwill.

In Nigeria, Eid-el-Fitr is traditionally marked with special prayers at mosques and prayer grounds, as well as visits to family and friends. Many also use the occasion to give Zakat al-Fitr, a form of charity that ensures the less privileged can partake in the celebration.

Security and Safety Measures for the Celebration

In light of the upcoming festivities, the Federal Government has also assured citizens of adequate security arrangements to ensure a peaceful celebration. Law enforcement agencies, including the police, civil defense corps, and other security outfits, have been directed to maintain law and order throughout the holiday period.

Authorities have also urged Nigerians to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.

While celebrations are encouraged, the government has reminded citizens to prioritize safety, especially in crowded areas.

Economic and Social Impact

The declaration of public holidays for Eid-el-Fitr will have an impact on businesses and public services across the country.

Many government offices, schools, and private institutions will remain closed during this period, allowing workers and students to fully participate in the celebrations.

The holiday is also expected to boost economic activities in markets and commercial centers, as Nigerians prepare for festivities by purchasing food, clothing, and other essentials.

Additionally, transportation networks are likely to experience increased activity, with many traveling to celebrate with family and loved ones.

As Nigerians prepare for Eid-el-Fitr, the Federal Government’s declaration of public holidays underscores the importance of the occasion. It is a time for reflection, gratitude, and unity.

As the country navigates its socio-political and economic challenges, the message of peace and cooperation shared by the Minister of Interior serves as a reminder of the collective effort required to build a stronger nation.

With the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure and peaceful environment, citizens are encouraged to celebrate responsibly and extend goodwill to their communities.

The federal government’s Eid Mubarak wishes to all Muslims reinforce the spirit of inclusivity and national cohesion as the country embraces this significant festival.
