The Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jonny Baxter, has expressed deep concern over the escalating political violence in Osun State, describing the recent killings and destruction as a worrisome development that threatens the region’s longstanding peace and stability.

During a courtesy visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at his palace on Wednesday, Baxter condemned the political unrest that has led to the loss of lives and properties. He stressed that such violence is not only unacceptable but also detrimental to the progress and harmony for which Osun State has been known over the years.

“I have known Osun State to be a peaceful place for the past 15 years. Seeing and hearing about the destruction of lives and properties for political reasons is deeply condemnable,” Baxter stated, highlighting the urgency of restoring stability in the state.

The visit comes in the wake of recent political killings that have unsettled Osun, raising alarms among citizens and stakeholders. Just a few days prior to Baxter’s visit, reports surfaced of multiple politically motivated assassinations, further exacerbating tensions between rival political factions. These violent incidents have not only disrupted the social fabric of the state but have also sparked fears of prolonged instability.

The British diplomat urged the Ooni to take decisive action alongside other traditional rulers and government officials to restore peace and stability in Osun. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to end the bloodshed, urging political actors to exercise restraint and prioritize the welfare of the people over personal ambitions.

Baxter also underscored the historical ties between Ile-Ife and Britain, drawing a parallel between Buckingham Palace and the House of Oduduwa. He recalled the contributions of past Yoruba monarchs in strengthening the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

“The first Governor of Western Nigeria, Ooni Adesoji Aderemi, built a very strong institutional relationship with Buckingham Palace in London. This relationship was strengthened by your predecessor, Ooni Okunade Sijuwade. Please, do not let the bond break during your reign as the present Ooni of Ife and the overall king of the Yoruba race,” Baxter urged.

In his response, the Ooni of Ife, speaking on behalf of the Osun State Council of Obas and Chiefs, condemned the recent political violence and called for an immediate end to the bloodshed. He implored political leaders to embrace peace and work together for the progress of the state.

“The destruction of lives and properties for political gains is unwarranted. Osun has been known for its peace and harmony over the years, as the British Deputy High Commissioner has noted. It is crucial that all political actors prioritize the interests of the state over personal ambitions,” Ooni Ogunwusi stated.

The monarch also reassured the British envoy of his commitment to promoting peace and stability in Osun, emphasizing the role of traditional institutions in fostering unity among the people. He called on security agencies to step up efforts in curbing the violence and ensuring justice for victims of political killings.

The recent surge in political violence in Osun has raised concerns among residents and political observers. With the 2027 general elections drawing closer, there are fears that political rivalry may intensify, leading to further unrest. Reports indicate that rival political parties have accused each other of instigating the violence, further complicating efforts to de-escalate tensions.

In response to the unrest, Governor Ademola Adeleke has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring security in the state. However, opposition parties have criticized his government, arguing that more decisive actions are needed to curb the growing threat of politically motivated attacks.

Similarly, former Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s camp has called on the state government to take responsibility for the killings, accusing Adeleke’s administration of failing to provide adequate security measures to prevent the violence. Meanwhile, the ruling party has alleged that opposition forces are behind the unrest, claiming that imported thugs have been used to destabilize the state.

As tensions continue to rise, stakeholders have urged security agencies to intensify their efforts in maintaining law and order. Civil society organizations have also called for thorough investigations into the killings and the prosecution of those responsible to serve as a deterrent to future violence.

Baxter’s visit and his strong remarks on the crisis highlight the international community’s growing concern over the security situation in Osun. His call for peace echoes the sentiments of many who fear that if urgent steps are not taken, the state could face further turmoil.

As the political climate remains volatile, the onus is on all political actors, traditional institutions, and security agencies to work together in restoring peace to Osun State. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether meaningful steps will be taken to end the violence and prevent further loss of lives.
