In response to the growing crisis of power infrastructure vandalism, the Nigerian government has taken decisive action by forming a specialized security force known as the ‘Power Rangers.’
This initiative follows persistent attacks on power installations, which have led to widespread blackouts and disrupted economic activities.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the establishment of the Power Rangers, modeled after the successful Mines Marshalls launched in March 2024 to tackle security challenges in the mining sector.
He emphasized that the government will no longer tolerate sabotage in the power sector.
“These criminals who sabotage our power sector should understand that their time is up. The full weight of the law will soon be upon them, and their reign of destruction will no longer be tolerated,” the minister stated firmly.
The new security force, comprising officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), will be stationed across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to prevent acts of vandalism. Minister Tunji-Ojo stressed that the officers are being carefully selected and screened based on their expertise and physical capability.
“We are ensuring that those assigned to protect our power installations are competent and fit for the task. Every state, including the FCT, will have dedicated officers on the ground to put an end to this menace,” he affirmed.
The decision to establish the Power Rangers comes amid increased reports of power disruptions caused by vandalism, as well as growing public outcry over the nation’s electricity challenges. The minister reiterated that strict measures will be implemented to hold vandals accountable.
“We will not allow a handful of individuals to continuously disrupt the nation’s power supply. The law will take its full course, and justice will be served,” he warned.
As this initiative progresses, the government reassures Nigerians that decisive actions will be taken to deter further attacks and ensure the stability of the power sector. The Power Rangers will play a crucial role in safeguarding Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, marking a new era in the fight against energy sector sabotage.
